ktr_fcMECHANICSBURG, Pa. -- Sunbury Press has released Keep Turning Right: You'll Get There Eventually, Rick Dapp's humorous "how-not-to" book about life in the unemployment line. Laid off? Let go? Down-sized? Right-sized? Made redundant? Author Rick Dapp relates his personal experiences dealing with unemployment at an inopportune time -- near the end of his career. Dapp does this with modesty and good humor, enlightening us all along the way about what is most important in life. FROM THE AUTHOR: It was an experience with my dad that provided the title for this book. Once, when I was hopelessly lost in downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan, (a city of seemingly all one-way streets) I called him from a pay phone and expressed my frustration at ever finding my way out of my predicament. His reply was, “Keep turning right, you’ll get there eventually.” Those words stayed with me and, despite a variety of wrong turns in life, I always fell back upon the simple logic of his statement. The book is not intended as a solution to the problem of unemployment, as many “how-to” books profess, but is, rather, a “how-not-to” volume from someone who has lived the experience. rick_profile_bw_headshotEXCERPT: Sudden unemployment and the removal from the mainstream often lends itself to experimentation in facial hair if you are a man—a perfect time to grow a beard if you haven’t done so in a while. If you can get past the itchy stage, and if you have the ability to grow a good one, you should indulge yourself. Unlike the beard or moustache you attempt during vacation, the one that good sense tells you to shave off on Monday morning before you return to work, facial hair allows you to exude a ruddy sense of individualism. It’s a great time to experiment with your new-found freedom. Besides, if you decide it’s just not “you,” it can be shaved off at a later date. Other experiments in personal freedom, like tattoos, can be more problematic as you transition back into the working world since they aren’t as easily removed. If going with a tattoo, get one that can be obscured by clothing during the interview. Since you can’t foretell who will be interviewing you for the next position, the ability to return to “normal” mode is critical.
