Joe Regenbogen taught high school history for 40 years. He began teaching in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans in 1979, where two years later, he was named runner-up for city-wide teacher-of-the-year. After moving to St. Louis in 1984, he continued teaching in the Parkway School District in the western suburbs of St. Louis. During the final years of his career, Joe taught in a unique program for the exceptionally gifted, where his students ended their eighth-grade year by taking the AP exam in American History.
As Joe approached his retirement, he took up writing as a second career. To date, he has published six books. His first two, Questioning History and Relearning History, were intended to deepen students’ understanding of the past. Joe’s third book, The Boys of Brookdale, told the accounts of World War Two veterans who lived their final years in the same senior living facility where Joe’s father resided. Making a Difference recounted the story of Irl Solomon and his 38-year teaching career in East St. Louis, Illinois, one of the nation’s most challenging school districts. Joe's two introspective novels are Longs Peak and Dying of the Light.
Now enjoying his retirement, Joe resides with Dana, his wife of 45 years, in their long-time home. Together, they raised their two children, Julie, a federal public defender, and Jack, a non-profit attorney. In addition to writing, Joe currently helps Dana provide full-time daycare for their two granddaughters, Ava and Delaney.
