Benjon Quimby, an indentured servant to farmer Jonas Baumheit, heads with his master to a new settlement west of the Susquehanna near the newly built Fort Granville (now Lewistown, Pa.). Soon the pair are embroiled in the French and Indian War as natives led by Captain Jacobs burn the fort and kill the military commander, Lieutenant Edward Armstrong. The Lieutenant's brother, Colonel John Armstrong of Carlisle, then leads a raid on Captain Jacobs' village at Kittanning. Quimby accompanies and also meets Hugh Mercer and others involved.

This novel (originally called After Braddock Failed) is most likely the first written by Herbert Stover, never published in his lifetime. The manuscript was found in an envelope at his granddaughter's home and has been digitized and edited.
